The flag of Scotland was adopted as the national flag in the 16th century and is considered one of the oldest flags in the world dating back to 832 or further, perhaps to 761. The flag is made with a white diagonal saltire of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, on a blue background.

The origins of the Scotland flag is steeped in legend; a triumphant story handed down by tradition from earlier times claims that King Angus (or Óengus) of The Picts led an army to Athelstaneford, in East Lothian where they became heavily outnumbered and surrounded by an army of Angles under King Athelstan. The night before battle, Saint Andrew appeared to King Angus in a dream assuring him of victory over Angles. When the two armies faced each other for battle the following morning, a white saltire cloud formed against the clear blue sky. Thought to be an omen by all present, the Angles lost confidence and were defeated.
